Young Adult Programs

Young Adult programs are for teens who are 13 years and older.  Programs are free unless otherwise noted.  Please register at the Adult Reference desk.

Soap Making:  Thursday, June 20 at 7PM

Making soap is really fun and easy.  Learn the basics and create a soap basket.  Registration begins June 6.

Terrific Terrariums:  Monday, July 8 at 7PM

From “beneath the surface” comes this whimsical and fun terrarium class with art teacher Karen Morea!  You will learn to scientifically create layers for proper filtration in a jar, plant various types of greenery, and add fun miniatures and cool decorative elements.  Registration begins June 24.

Science Museum Of Long Island:  Reptiles and Amphibians:  Thursday, July 25 at 5PM

This program is an introduction to the fascinating field of herpetology.  Discover the varied differences between reptiles and amphibians and the unique adaptations of turtles, snakes, lizards, frogs, and toads.  Registration begins July 11.

Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum:  Monday, August 5 at 7PM

Calling all artists:  Did you know you can make paints from your garden?  Try your hand at crushing leaves and colorful vegetables with mortars and pestles to extract their natural tints and colors.  Learn how to use the pigments to create a masterpiece.  Registration begins July 22.

Science Museum of Long Island:  Skylab:  Thursday, August 8 at 5PM

Gaze up at the night sky inside our portable planetarium and discover that stars each have a different brightness and color.  Explore some special features of the sky including galaxies, nebulae, and black holes.  Registration begins July 25.

Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum:  Earthy Jewelry:  Monday, August 13 at 7PM

Throughout history, jewelry and trade objects have been crafted from the ocean using clay, shells and pearls.  Make your own beads out of recycled and natural materials.  Create nautical inspired jewelry for key chains.  Registration begins July 30.

Zumba for Teens:  Thursdays, August 15, 22, & 29 at 7PM

Zumba is a fitness phenomenon that combines dancing and working out using a variety of high energy rhythms including hip-hop, reggaeton, and cumbia beats.  Fitness trainer, Jill Ackiron-Moses, will teach you special teen-oriented choreographed routines in this three part series where you will boost your metabolism and increase your co-ordination and focus.  Please wear sneakers (no flip-flops) and bring a bottle of water.   Registration begins August 1.

Life Skills:  Enneagrams or What Kind of Leader are You?:  Thursday, September 26 at 7PM

Take the Enneagram Personality Test and find out what type of leader you are!  The Enneagram measures personality and helps you identify which of the 9 different types you fall into.  Learn what your strengths and weaknesses are and what motivators will contribute to you taking a strong and positive leadership role.  This program is presented by life coach Yvonne Saravia.  Registration begins September 12.
